It has long been known that proper diet can prevent cancer. Does this also apply to breast cancer? The diet may have an impact on the development of cancer, their development and the course of later stages of the disease. For many years, research has been conducted on the effects of food intake on the level of estrogen, a female hormone that is the starting point for the formation of cancerous changes.
Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women in developing and highly developed countries, including Poland. These tumors affect especially postmenopausal women, but they are also detected in younger women and in men. Statistically, on average, every 16 women will develop breast cancer. This is 20% of all malignant tumors occurring in women.
Numerous scientific studies show that Asian women are much less likely to have breast cancer than American or European women, and moreover, progress in the disease is much slower. It was also proved that these differences do not result from genetic predisposition, because after changing residence (eg European countries), these women suffer from a similar frequency as natives. Therefore, one should ask the question “what elements of the Asian diet are beneficial to our health?”
There are foods that are involved in the transformation and absorption of estrogen, and thus counteract the development of hormone-dependent cancers, such as breast, uterine or ovarian cancer. The estrogen lowering diet is of great importance not only in pre-menopausal women but also in postmenopausal women in whom estrogen is produced by fat cells.
Foods that reduce the risk of breast cancer
Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and other cruciferous vegetables. Their beneficial effects are the indoles contained in them, which accelerate the deactivation of estrogen. For the best effect, eat raw or lightly cooked vegetables, because long cooking damages the indole and deprives anti-estrogenic effect.
Fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C prevent not only breast cancer, but also other cancers. The recommended dose against cancer is 380 mg per day. Although it is much higher than the basic recommended daily dose, however, vitamin C can not be overdosed because its excess is excreted in the urine, while its consumption may reduce the risk of breast cancer by about 16%.
Beans and soybeans, which contain phytoestrogens responsible for inhibiting the action of estrogen and providing health to Asian women who are connoisseurs of soy products.
Marine fish thanks to the high content of fish fat strengthen the immune system, and what is associated with it inhibits metastasis of breast cancer.
Wheat bran has the ability to drastically reduce estrogen levels, due to the high content of sparingly soluble fibers. About five tablespoons of wheat bran a day is able to lower estrogen levels by about 15%.
Foods that can promote the development of breast cancer
Meat and saturated fatty acids intensify the recurrence and growth of tumors, the development of which depends on the level of estrogen, because it increases its concentration in the blood.
Alcohol. Studies show that drinking two drinks a day increases the risk of breast cancer twice. It is presumed that excessive alcohol consumption may be the cause of 13% of American breast cancer patients.
