Many of as make new year’s resolutions and we promise ourselves that in the following months we will eat better. However, after the Christmas period we quickly throw ourselves into work and projects – travels, business trips and then vacation verify our changes, usually to our disadvantage.
Food in hotels and restaurants
Frequent business travels don’t need to leads to increasing our weight and the level of adipose tissue. The consequence in the form of fat on the belly is often the result of snacking during night work with laptop and eating late dinners in restaurants or roadside bars. When our thoughts are focused on work, it is very hard to make rational nutritional decisions. It is often related to eating a lot of food in a rush. Some people decide to focus on eating cookies and drinking a lot of coffee with milk – this is also not conducive to maintaining weight.
How to follow a diet during business travels?
A well-tried way to follow a healthy diet during business trips is cooking by yourself. Before choosing a hotel, it is worth checking if it offers breakfasts and if yes, if they will be available in the form of a buffet. It is also worth checking if there is a fridge in the hotel room. These are the issues that have important influence on a diet. Another aspect is the time to eat a meal. It is worth assessing the approximate duration of the meetings and if there are sufficiently long breaks provided. The localization of the hotel or the temporary workplace is also very important as well as its gastronomic and commercial neighborhood – it is worth knowing where to eat good and healthy food or buy such meals.
What should we eat?
If a hungry person doesn’t have a box with healthy food within reach, they will probably buy a hot-dog, chocolate bar or brioche. We recommend preparing meals on your own, on the basis of groats or rice with an additive of meat, vegetables and healthy fats. Healthy fats are avocado, olive oil as well as nuts and seeds. The latter are perfect as snacks. Sandwiches made from white bread are not recommended. It is better to prepare a sandwich from wholemeal bread with an additive of roasted meat or smoked fish and vegetables.
Protein bars and nuts instead of cookies
Some meetings are very long – e.g. the Board meetings of two related companies or the meetings of working teams accomplishing a given project. On the large table, apart from laptops, water bottles and documents, we will find cookies and coffee – the main source of energy for workers at this table. If the breaks are short and you are not able to eat a nutritious, large meal from the box (you probably don’t even feel like eating it), reach for healthy snacks, such as protein bars and nuts. In this way, you will provide energy to your organism in the form of protein, healthy fats and complex carbs (nuts). There are also fruits next to nuts – three portions of fruits can be eaten instead of two different healthy snacks, unless you don’t tolerate fructose or suffer from irritable bowel syndrome. Instead of a few cups of coffee, drink one and a bottle of water – a hydrated organism is full of vitality and energy.
The last piece of advice – don’t work long hours
Using electronic appliances until late night hours – laptop or tablet, causes the disorders of hormone secretion. Artificial light and short sleep especially influence the center of hunger and satiety. In normal conditions, the organism secretes the satiety hormone – ghrelin. Under the influence of artificial light, the organism starts to produce leptin, i.e. the hunger hormone. Increased appetite is conducive to snacking at night, which is one of the causes of putting on weight.
