ALCOHOL AND WEIGHT LOSS – HOW TO SURVIVE FOR NEW YEAR’S EVE?

Can alcohol go hand-in-hand with weight loss? We’ve certainly heard for decades that it’s not necessarily the case. In addition to the fact that it’s harmful to the body, in the weight loss process it provides only empty calories, which increases our caloric balance, while making the fight with kilograms much more difficult. Today, however, we will try to look at it in terms of one-time drinking alcohol. Will drinking a bit of it on New Year’s Eve immediately negatively affect our weight loss? Is the toast to the birthday boy on his birthday the worst action we’ve done for our body? We will try to cover all of that in this article.

***

It’s true that frequent drinking is certainly not a good way to lose weight. However, it’s worth remembering that there is healthy restraint in everything, so drinking a glass of wine, a glass of champagne or other alcohol once will definitely not affect all weight loss. Often drinking goes hand in hand with eating snacks or fatty food and usually such a combination turns out to be an explosive mixture than a glass of champagne alone.

It’s known that if we eat too much and the amount of calories consumed is greater than we need them, the rest is converted into adipose tissue. This is the case whenever we obtain a positive caloric balance. If the excess carbohydrates or fats are metabolized into fuel that gives us energy, then all the rest is converted into fat because it saves this excess for later. Depending on how much alcohol we drink and how much food we eat, that’s how much damage we will do to the body in terms of body weight as well as fat growth.

Why does the scale show more weight after an evening of drinking?

It certainly happened more than once that you went crazy the day before with drinking alcohol and eating too much food, right? And suddenly the next day we get on the scale, and it shows  two kilograms more. We wonder how it’s possible that we need so many weeks of struggle to lose weight, and to gain weight in one evening with alcohol and unhealthy food? Calm down! This is excess water that appeared in the body under the influence of alcohol, as well as salty snacks with a lot of sodium and carbohydrates. They caused water retention in the body. The excess water disappears as soon as it appears. So if it’s a one-time thing with alcohol and snacks, there is no problem, but if this one night happens too often, then the problem starts.

So how do you get on track?

The basis is a quick return to your habits. Even if you had unhealthy snacks and some alcohol yesterday evening, don’t be persuaded to repeat that. You need to start acting just like before, so instead of alcohol you should go back to water, and chips, sticks or spicy dishes should be replaced by complex carbohydrates, lean meat giving protein and healthy fats rich in Omega – 3. The same is true with matter of activity. It happens in many cases, where we are able to kill our routine and hard work in one day. Suddenly, after an alcoholic night, we don’t have the strength to go out for training, the next day we have a headache, and in two days we go to work. And we won’t look back, and a week passes, then another and next.

STOP! We can absolutely not allow this situation. The basis is, therefore, to go outside. Maybe a quick walk the next day, maybe a slow jog to regenerate and oxygenate? Or maybe a visit to the gym with friends? Remember, every step is better than doing nothing. If you remember about it, surely this one night will not change your healthy life and proper habits. We immediately reach for water to be able to hydrate the body. Before going to bed, let’s eat a banana, for example, because it’s rich in potassium and it can counteract flatulence. Let’s put on the right amount of sleep, because nothing regenerates like sleep. If we take care of everything properly, we will certainly feel good as soon as we wake up and we will gladly start another active and healthy day in our life.

What should you bet on when it comes to the detox menu?

A detox cocktail is definitely a very good idea that will put you on your feet and make you feel better. How to prepare it? 1 cup chopped celery, 2 cups pineapple, 1 tablespoon of mint, 1 kiwi, 1 lime juice, and 1 cup of coconut water. Such a mixture will definitely turn out to be a real hit. Celery and pineapple have a diuretic effect and reduce flatulence. Coconut water gives us the opportunity to replenish the necessary electrolytes that we lost drinking alcohol. Kiwi has a lot of vitamin C.

Summary

New Year’s Eve is only once a year, like for example a birthday, a loved one’s wedding or other important celebration. The most important thing is to be reasonable. If we are on a diet, these two glasses of champagne will definitely not hurt us and alcohol will not cause that suddenly we will have to start everything from the beginning. Calm down! The basis is immediately after returning to the „normal”, healthy track.
