Dessert and weight loss

Eating sweet foods gives pleasure and improves our mood. For people trying to lose weight, refusing sweets is a real challenge. Some people ask themselves “can you lose weight without giving up desserts?”. The answer to this question is “depends what kind of deserts”.

Rules about making desserts

The perfect dessert for a person trying to lose weight is one that contains the least amount of fat and sugar possible. The latter is usually more doubtful, because by definition, a dessert has to be sweet. Luckily, there are sweeteners that can make any food sweeter without adding any sugar. Of course, the best choice are the natural sweeteners, such as stevia, lucuma or erytrol. Some of these substances are very sweet, which has to be considered while making a dessert based on a recipe that contains sugar. There’s not much difference in calories between sugar cane and beet sugar, which is why it’s not a good replacement for people who are trying to lose weight. Honey or mixed dates are a better choice.

Among most common dessert ingredients is jam. Jams bought in stores usually contain a high amount of sugar, which is why it’s better to replace them with fresh fruits. You can also make your own, light jam.

Another important dessert ingredient, especially in pastries, is flour. The usual wheat flour can be replaced by wholegrain flour.

Among cakes for people who are trying to lose weight, the best choice is sponge cake. It’s one of the healthiest type of cake. It only contains eggs, flour and sugar, which is why it’s worth eating not just during a diet.

Milk cocktails are also noteworthy. A lot of people choose 0% milk, to reduce fat in the meal. This milk lacks a few important ingredients, which is why it’s better to add milk containing a bit of fat, preferably between 0,5% and 2%.

If a dessert contains chocolate, it’s better to choose bitter, which has less sugar but also contains more magnesium and iron.

Oatmeal Muffins

The first proposition for people who love sweets are oatmeal muffins. To prepare them we need:

  • 3/3 cups of oatmeal
  • ½ cups of natural yoghurt
  • 1,5 tablespoons of powdered stevia
  • One egg
  • ¾ cups of fruits
  • 2 tablespoons of desiccated coconut

Add the egg and stevia to the yoghurt and mix or whip to obtain a homogeneous mixture. Then add oatmeal and coconut. After through mixing we need to prepare the muffin tins. We pour the mixture into them and arrange fruits on top. Baking time is between 25-30 minutes and the optimal temperature is 180 degrees C.

Almond ice-cream

During a diet you don’t need to resign from eating ice cream. In summer it’s worth making almond ice cream with chia seeds. For this we need:

  • ¼ litres of almond milk
  • 2 tablespoons of chia seeds
  • ½ cup of fruits, e.g. raspberries or wild strawberries
  • 1 tablespoon of desiccated coconut
  • 2 teaspoons of honey

We begin the preparation by mixing milk, chia seeds and honey. Then we should add the fruits and desiccated coconut. After mixing all the ingredients, we put the mass in the fridge for 3 hours. We then put the ice cream in an ice cream mould and freeze it.

Lemon-mint mousse

Those who like the taste of mint should try the lemon-mint mousse. We need the following ingredients:

  • 200ml of soy milk.
  • 100g of natural yoghurt
  • Juice from half of a lemon
  • Around a dozen mint leaves
  • 3 teaspoons of stevia
  • Half a teaspoon of agar

Milk should be heated up, then we should add to it stevia and dissolved in boiling water agar. We chop half of the mint leaves and add them to the milk. We also pour in the lemon juice. In a second container we mix yoghurt with the rest of the mint leaves. When the milk cools down a bit, we take both parts of the dessert and put it in the fridge for a few hours.

Chocolate pudding

Another recipe will definitely be the favourite of people who like chocolate desserts, and people who don’t like to spend too much time in the kitchen. To prepare the pudding we need:

  • 150g of light, homogenized cottage cheese
  • ½ tablespoons of cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon of agar
  • 2 teaspoons of powdered stevia
  • A pinch of cinnamon

We mix the cottage cheese with cocoa, stevia and cinnamon. We dissolve agar in a small amount of hot water and then add it to the cottage cheese. We thoroughly mix the whole thing and put it in the fridge for around 3 hours.

Light Waffles

Waffles are also noteworthy. We can eat them warm, which is why it’s a perfect dessert on cold days. To prepare them we need:

  • One egg
  • 1 cup of wholemeal flour
  • one tablespoon of stevia or xylitol
  • ¼ cup of milk

Fluff the yolk and add flour. Pour the milk and mix until you obtain a homogeneous mixture. Whisk the egg white (for example by using a blender), then add it to the dough. After combining all the ingredients, heat up the waffle maker and fry the waffles, dividing the dough to 3-5 portions. Waffles are best eaten with seasonal fruits. You can also pour some natural yoghurt on them.

It’s just a few proposed desserts which you can eat during a diet. Apart from dietetic recipes you can also use traditional desserts, modifying them so they don’t have a negative impact on the figure.
